Lurley Hideaways

lurley 2_edited.jpg

A very warm welcome to Lurley Hideaways, a home away from home. Set in Lurley Manor thought to date from the late 15th/early 16th century, in a lovely setting off a peaceful country lane, on the edge of the tiny hamlet of Lurley. The house is set well back within its grounds of 4.5 acres, amidst unspoilt countryside and just to the west of the thriving market town of Tiverton. The neighbouring village of Calverleigh has a pretty church and village hall and there is a pub just outside the village, only a three minute drive or 15 minute walk from our house. We work very hard to attract wildlife, and so you may be lucky to see deer, owls, woodpeckers, or even a kingfisher during your stay.

Local transport links are good too with the A361, A396 and J27 M5 all within easy reach and Tiverton Parkway has direct rail services to Exeter (15 minutes) and Paddington (1 hour 52 minutes). Exeter Airport is also within easy reach offering a daily service to London City Airport (1 hour).

In August 2024, we embarked on an exciting new chapter by moving to Lurley Manor in Devon from West Sussex. We are thrilled to start this adventure, creating a warm and welcoming space that reflects our love for family, nature, and community.

Between us, we have six wonderful children in their 30s and five adorable grandchildren, who don’t live with us but visit often—something we cherish deeply as a family-oriented couple. Oh, and let’s not forget our two beloved doggies, Charlie and Milo, who are always by our side!

Our vision for Lurley Manor is ever-growing. Alongside our holiday lets, we’will be excited to introduce alpacas, chickens, ducks, cats, goats, and maybe even a few more furry friends to our little haven. We’re also passionate about offering Health & Wellness retreats, Art getaways, and so much more, all set within the tranquil beauty of our surroundings.

We’re filled with excitement and gratitude as we begin this journey, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

With love,
Ruth & Ian 🌿

Thought to date from the late 15th/early 16th century, Lurley Manor is a lovely example of an open hall house and is built of rendered cob and stone under a slate roof.

The house has retained many of its original architectural features. These include the studded oak front door under a later 17th century porch, three oak doorways with Tudor arches, inglenook fireplaces, beamed ceilings with chamfered beams.

In 1985, the owners then took advantage of the south-facing sheltered setting of the house to create the beautiful gardens, and arboretum. They also developed and held the Plant Heritage National Collection of Geums. They would travel the world looking for new and rare species of plants including visits to the mountains of Bhutan by donkey and mature examples of their quest thrive at Lurley today. It contains a gorgeous variety of trees and shrubs, such as Pere David's maple, Chilean firetree, Mexican orange, Black gum, Honey locust and Mountain black cherry to name but a few. A stream flows down a natural fold in the land before dropping down to an orchard which contains a variety of apple trees, pears and medlars.

In the 19.. the well known Leonard Baskin spent nine years in Devon at Lurley Manor, close to his friend Ted Hughes, for whom he illustrated Crow. Sylvia Plath dedicated "Sculptor" to Leonard Baskin in her famous work, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960)."Leonard Baskin was one of the prolific artists of the 20th century. He was a sculptor of renown. He was a writer and illustrator of books ranging from the bible to children’s’ stories and natural history. He was a talented water-colourist and a superb, prolific print-maker. His prints ranged from woodcuts through lithography and etching; his subjects covered portraits, flower studies, biblical, classical and mythological scenes."
